Long Term Goal #1

Local Plastics and Glass Recycling Facility

Hard to recycle plastic and glass have been problematic on a large scale due to the inability to produce a profit from large regional facilities. These materials accumulate in our landfill with little hope of ever leaving.

But there is a way to turn these materials into a local resource. Mixed plastic can be melted and mixed with waste wood products to form composite boards. These boards could be made available for community projects and at a reduced cost to community members as a weather resistant building material.

Glass can be transformed into cullet that is a direct drop in for sand. Several area businesses use a lot of sand in their operations, as does the local government. Arrangements could be made with these businesses, and interested community members, to acquire the end product at a price that would reduce the overall cost of their projects without affecting the quality.

Long Term Goal #2

Develop a Robust and Sustainable FireWise Program

Many communities are listed as FireWise cities but do not bring the full potential of the program to fruition. A committee of dedicated individuals needs to be established that will develop plans for the current and subsequent years for their community. Resources need to be secured and allocated on an ongoing basis to ensure that progress can continue indefinitely. Regular community engagement activities need to be held to keep the program fresh and identify new opportunities for improvement.
